Curling, perhaps the most underrated Olympic sport, brought a lot of heat to the 2018 games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Mixed doubles teams debuted this year; in addition to the 4-person men’s and women’s teams, one male and one female could pair up for a slightly modified competition. In the classic game, each team throws eight stones in each of the 10 ends (or rounds). The players alternate throws every two stones. The end (round) is complete after each team throws its eight stones. When the stone is thrown, the athletes control its speed and direction by sweeping in front of its path, which melts the ice. The final landing zone determines the score.

John Shuster led Team USA’s mens curlers to their first ever gold medal, improving upon their bronze earned at Turin 2006. They upset highly ranked Sweden 10-7 after a 5-5 tie after seven ends. Sweden received silver and Switzerland bested Canada for the men’s bronze medal.

Canada’s Lawes and Morris lived up to expectation by beating Switzerland 10-3 in the mixed doubles gold match. Russia’s duo Krushelnitsky and his wife took the bronze, but due to a positive drug test for meldonium– a banned substance that “increases blood flow and improves exercise capacity”– the IOC reattributed the medal to Norway. In women’s curling, Sweden won gold, followed by Korea and then Japan.

Although Olympics ratings reached an all-time low this year, curling drama reached an all-time high between the mixed doubles debut, Team USA’s upset of Sweden for its first gold medal and Russia’s doping scandal.
