Amazon: Going Places
On Monday Jan. 22, Amazon will be releasing their newest innovation—a convenience store. As odd as it may seem, it is no ordinary store. Amazon has created a store with no lines, no cashiers and no stopping to pay. All transactions will be carried out strictly through the use of new technology created by the company. Amazon originally announced that this store would be opened about a year ago, but the plans were not able to be carried out until this year. The first Amazon Go store will be introduced on the first floor of Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle, Washington.
Upon arrival at the store, customers will scan the Amazon Go app on their phones. They are then able to “purchase” a wide array of groceries in the store. A variety of health food options are available, as well as beverages and even liquor. After picking out items, the customer is finished with their shopping experience. Rather than waiting in line to check out, the transaction will be automatically charged to the Amazon Go account that was previously scanned as they entered the store. They are then able to leave the store without physically checking out. There are many cameras and sensors throughout the store that also assist in identifying a customer’s purchase. Although no cashiers are necessary, there will still be employees at this store. Amazon has employed technicians that will assist with sensor and app malfunctions. There will also be an ID checker by the alcohol section— for obvious reasons.
With this new creation, Amazon hopes to gain a larger customer base outside of their online store by creating a tangible business that is accessible to all people. Although taking ten minutes out of a person’s day to wait in line may not be much, Amazon hopes that this will not only elevate convenience, but also create a more widespread knowledge of the power of technology. The company hopes to revolutionize one of the most common daily activities—the shopping experience.
