From Principal T.K. screaming ‘H on 3,’ to Super Fans getting ‘A Little Bit Rowdy,’ and even the cheerleaders shouting ‘If There’s a Knight in the House,’ school spirit has encompassed Hoban’s environment for many decades. As the student body has already experienced their first pep rally of the school year, as well as three home football games, the noise level has not been as impressive as in years past—but is slowly improving.
Catherine Perrow, Principal and Chief Academic and School Operations Officer, reflects on her experience with Hoban spirit. “The tradition of school spirit at Hoban is unlike anything I have ever experienced in other schools. We believe in celebrating the past and the present here at Hoban and it’s as if the generations of alumni come through the enthusiasm of our current students.”
School spirit is not just about showing up to football games or trying to be the loudest at pep rallies, it is also about fostering a sense of community and belonging throughout the hallowed halls of The Castle. No matter if it was a long day, giving 100 percent energy at every pep rally makes it so much more enjoyable for all current, past, and future Knights.
“I understand it’s the end of a long school day, everyone is hot, sweaty, and ready to head home, but it’s so important to be loud at pep rallies,” Senior Super Fan Ava Norton comments. “They set the tone for whatever athletic or academic events we have coming up and they give us the chance to come together as one student body, which is pretty cool.”
Yes, football games are very fun, but it is also important to support other teams and activities. Through the support of other events, students encompass that feeling of family and comfort that makes the golden dome shine bright. Events are abundant every year at Hoban for students to show off their pride in the school. Outside of the stadium and court, I love being a Student Ambassador, which allows me to show others what makes me scream every Friday night!
Freshmen, listen up. “The energy in the freshman student section isn’t awful, but it needs to be a lot better. After all, we are the biggest class at Hoban right now,” says Freshman Samuel Walker. You chose Hoban for a reason which means you have an obligation as a Knight to show up and show out.
Senior Student Council Co-President Daniel Bisesi reflects on the spirit roaming throughout the student body. “So far this year, the spirit in the student section has been ecstatic, but we could use a little more help from the freshmen. They are progressing each week, and that is all we could ask for.”
“Get as loud as you can, have as much fun as you can, and be sure to include anyone who isn’t sure how to be involved. We are better as a big family,” Perrow adds.
When most people are asked why they chose Hoban, most will highlight the family-like dynamic. School spirit unites us all with the same, rushing blue and gold blood. The spirit of the Knight lives beyond the energy and loudness of students. Hoban Alumni Michael Schmidt ‘92, explains that “it’s not about just four years, it’s about a lifetime.” Do not be afraid to let your school spirit show Knights. Tonight is the fourth home football game, so bring your best backward hats and leave your red solo cups at home!
