Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Muppet Christmas Carol
For over 40 years, the Muppets have been bringing joy and laughter to every audience they encounter. It was only a matter of time before they created a Christmas feature that would warm the hearts of children and parents alike.
In 1992, the Muppet Christmas Carol was born. The movie, a spin on Charles Dickens novel, A Christmas Carol, contains a unique blend of both humans and muppets making for one diverse cast.
The main role of Ebenezer Scrooge is played by the Academy award-winner Michael Caine, who is best recognized as Alfred from The Dark Knight. His co-stars include The Great Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat, who narrate the story; Ms. Piggy and Kermit the Frog, who play Bob and Emily Cratchit; and many other familiar faces such as Sam the Eagle, Beaker, Animal, Fozzie and of course, Waldorf and Statler.
Another huge part of what makes this movie so heart-warming is all of the original songs that were written into the score. Paul Williams, the composer of this musical film, created songs that both inspire dancing and break hearts in all of the members of the audience, young and old. Perhaps a few of the most famous are When Love is Gone, sung by Meredith Baurn, who portrays Belle, the ex-fiancé of Scrooge; It feels like Christmas, sung by Jerry Nelson as the ghost of Christmas Past; and Marley and Marley, sung by Dave Goelz and Jerry Nelson as the Marley brothers.
Extremely influential in the career of the director, Brian Henson, the film was his directing debut. Henson, the son of deceased Jim Henson, the original creator of the Muppets who died in 1990, took a big step in continuing the tradition begun by his Dad. The Muppet Christmas Carol signified the first step in moving forward for the Muppets.
This year, hundreds of families will once again be brought to new levels of holiday spirit because of this hilarious, heart-warming and imaginative production. But, this year is special. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the movie’s original release. So how can you watch it to celebrate?
The movie is on HBO for HBO subscribers. Or if don’t have HBO and are looking for a Christmas adventure, you could fly to Ireland or the UK where the movie will be making a Cinematic appearance. If not, it is also available for rent on Amazon, ITunes and Google Play.
A Christmas Carol is a story of redemption and the true spirit of giving and who could tell that story better than the Muppets, who have been giving us all the gift of laughter and inspiration for years and years.
