As the Hoban bowling team rolls into the 2024-25 season, a fresh face is at the helm, bringing renewed energy and ambition. Nicholas McCoy, a 1997 Hoban graduate, steps into his first year as head coach, eager to redefine the program’s approach to the sport.
“I plan to bring a more educational insight to the sport of bowling and debunk the idea of just throwing a ball down the lane and hitting pins,” McCoy said.
After graduating from Hoban, McCoy served four years in the United States Navy before earning a degree from the University of Akron in 2008. He spent two decades in social work before returning to his alma mater this year. Along with coaching, McCoy serves as Hoban’s Student Support Specialist, helping students with academic needs and personal well-being.
Last season, both the boys and girls teams achieved remarkable success. The girls posted an impressive 11-2 record and advanced to districts, while the boys went 13-4, with then-senior captain William Juvan qualifying for districts as well.
Although the team has yet to bring home a state championship, McCoy hopes this year’s talent can change that.
“I would like to pursue taking this talented boys and girls team into state contention with the hopes of raising the first Hoban bowling state banner in Barry Gymnasium,” McCoy said.
Leading the charge for the boys are senior captains Vincent Muren and William Juvan. Juvan has set his sights on mentoring younger teammates.
“My goal this season is to help the underclassmen improve their skills and refine their abilities as both bowlers and leaders,” he said.
While the girls’ team needs senior leadership, junior captains Katherine Folk and Abigail Kohrs are stepping up to guide their younger teammates.
“It’s honestly mind-blowing to be the oldest on the team,” Folk said. “I’m hoping to teach the younger girls how to keep a positive mindset and problem solve.”
The Knights kick off their season Wednesday, Dec. 4, against Norwayne at Charger Lanes. With a promising mix of leadership and talent, Hoban bowling looks poised for an exciting season. Be sure to attend a match and cheer on the Knights as they aim to make history!
