Hoban softball steps up to the plate

As spring sports begin, Hoban Softball hits the ground running. With an extremely successful season not far behind them, the team has high hopes for 2023.

Last year, the girls started the regular season with many sweeping wins against schools like Stow Munroe Falls, Cuyahoga Falls, and Wooster. The team refused to make losing a habit as they bounced back from each loss and continued to trek through.

They seemed to rule the division with each win they racked up, becoming more impressive than the last, even going so far as defeating rival Saint Vincent-Saint Mary in a dominant 8-3 win.

The ladies fell just short against schools like GlenOak (7-8) and Whitmer (10-9) but bounced right back against Notre Dame Academy (15-0) and Saint Joseph’s Academy (12-0). They refused to let losses tear them down, and after every defeat, came more victories.

As the girls headed into the playoffs, they were in a great spot. Their first three games were shutouts against Cleveland Heights (15-0), The Fighting Irish once again (13-0), and Tallmadge High School (11-0) earning them the Division II District Championship.

The Knights ended the season as regional runner-ups in a heartbreaking loss, but once again, they refused to be torn down. They celebrated an amazing season and began preparation for the next one.

Senior pitcher Faith Porter states, “This season is going to be great considering we have seven seniors, all of which who start and five committed to play in college.”

They will face off with teams like GlenOak, Elyria, and Wadsworth at their home field. They will play Saint Vincent-Saint Mary on the road and no doubt will dominate once again.

With the loss of senior Ellie Hardman, the new seniors will be challenged to take on a leadership role within the team. They will need to continue to build their bond and create a similar familial feeling to match that of last season.

Porter shares that “the team is going to Tennessee for spring break which will help bring us together. We are very close-knit which definitely helps our chemistry on the field. I believe that we will make it far in the playoffs once again.”

Watch out for Hoban softball this season, as they are more than ready to make another run toward a state championship.
