Hoban’s Junior Classical League (JCL) state convention

Most Knights know this club by its association with Valentine’s Day candy grams and nothing more. Little do they know that the weekly Friday JCL meetings and fundraising have all been in preparation for one weekend: The Ohio Junior Classical League State Convention.

On March 8, Hoban’s own JCL delegation will head down to Columbus to spend a weekend at a hotel participating in a myriad of events. Last year, Hoban sent nine students, along with Mr. Rossi and Mrs. Hahn, in a few minivans. But this year, with a whopping 17 members, Hoban’s JCL has upgraded to a coach bus thanks to all of Hoban’s support.

“JCL is Latin nerd heaven. You can learn new things, meet new people and just take a break from routine. It’s a great experience and nothing else is like it,” said Veronica McDowell, President of Hoban’s delegation.

From spirit (cheering till you can’t hear) to the Roman Banquet (togas and stolas are strongly recommended), the weekend’s schedule is jam packed with festivities based around the Classics. Whether you want to ace some grammar tests or participate in the riveting competition of Certamen (Roman academic challenge), OJCL has got you covered!

“It’s just really nice to see something you privately care about brought to life by a whole community of insanely passionate people. It’s a place of no judgement because everyone is equally nerdy, awkward and grateful to have found their people,” said Isabelle Hahn, one of Hoban’s most esteemed Latin students.

With students from across Ohio, the atmosphere at the state convention is like no other. It’s not uncommon to hear “Salve” as a normal greeting and myth-related pickup lines as a way to make friends. Filled with acceptance, friendliness and the perfect dose of classical puns, OJCL Convention is known as the best weekend of the year to many high schoolers across Ohio. This year, many Hoban delegates are looking forward to participating in the arts contests, dominating the tests and reuniting with friends from last year’s convention. We may have some students emerge from the awards ceremony laden with ribbons and awards!

Although this club is known as one for Latin students, all are welcome and no prior knowledge is needed. If Percy Jackson has crossed your hands before, you’re well on your way to becoming a master at Greek mythology. So, it’s time for everyone to brush up on their Roman history and Caesar quotes. The weekend of March 8 should be one for the (Ecce) books!
