In the labyrinthine halls of Archbishop Hoban High School, where opportunities abound, one club stands out, capturing the attention of Knights eager to bring the law to life – the illustrious Mock Trial. Under the guidance of the indomitable Jared Topp, Hoban’s Mock Trial team emerges as a dynamic force, drawing students into the riveting world of legal competition.
Mock Trial is not just a club; it’s a full-fledged competition where students are handed a case at the season’s onset, each assuming a distinct role. The team boasts not one but two Varsity squads, honing their skills every Wednesday at Hoban and Sundays at an Akron law firm. Consisting of 8 individuals per team – 4 witnesses and 4 attorneys – the group maintains flexibility with extra teammates when needed.
As the case unfolds, witnesses adhere to their assigned statements, while attorneys passionately argue either the defense or prosecution side. The scenarios presented are intricate crimes, each with a specific issue brought to trial. In the heat of competition, the Knights face off against rival schools, presenting their case before judges in a quest for victory. Additionally, for newcomers seeking to navigate the legal terrain, Hoban offers a “first-year” team.
The Mock Trial team’s accomplishments speak volumes. At the University of Cincinnati invitational, where the top 20 teams in the state clashed, Hoban’s gold team clinched a remarkable third place. During districts, both teams secured a spot at regionals, conquering the entire competition and earning a coveted ticket to the state level.
Anticipation lingers as the team sets its sights on the state competition, eager to carve out another chapter in their success story.
Junior Cassidy Wren, a testament to the transformative power of Mock Trial, shares her insights. “It has taught me time management and public speaking skills,” she reflects. Wren emphasizes the ability to think on one’s feet and gracefully accept criticism. The camaraderie forged within the team has become a source of profound gratitude for her. “I have also found a whole new group of friends that I never would have met otherwise,” she adds, underscoring the enduring friendships that blossom amidst the thrill of winning cases.
In the realm of Hoban’s Mock Trial, where legal prowess meets personal growth and camaraderie, there’s an undeniable allure. What more could one desire than to be a part of this thrilling journey through the corridors of justice, adorned with the badge of Archbishop Hoban’s Mock Trial?
