As the foliage slowly regains its color and the ground becomes more solid than slush, the blessings of spring grow increasingly tangible. After months of scraping ice from windshields on bitter cold mornings, most find themselves rejoicing in the warm weather and later sunsets. But while we enjoy the season’s beauty, it is also a good time to reflect on how we can give back to the planet, and what better occasion than Earth Day?
Observed every year on April 22, Earth Day celebrates the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness for the ongoing challenges facing the natural world. The first Earth Day took place in 1970, calling students and communities across the nation to join the fight for ecological justice. Although not a federally recognized holiday, Earth Day has grown to include more than one billion participants across 192 countries, making it one of the largest secular events in the world.
While Earth Day represents decades of effort toward environmental preservation, the planet still faces serious threats. Issues like climate change, fueled by deforestation, pollution, and the burning of fossil fuels, continue to accelerate. In the face of these problems, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. But these challenges are exactly why action is so important, and Earth Day serves as a reminder that even small steps matter.
Simple changes such as using less plastic, conserving water and energy, and supporting sustainable brands can make a real difference when practiced consistently. Though one person alone cannot solve everything, communities built on sustainability can share the load and create lasting change.
The fight for environmental justice matters not only for humanity but for all life on Earth. As you go about your day, consider the impact your choices have on the planet. Nobody is expected to change the world alone, but your participation matters.
Go make a difference, Knights.
