Senior Joey McCallum relays Hoban’s football legacy

Over the course of four years, Hoban football has no doubt made history. Yet, the last four years may have overshadowed the rich history of the program. So, one senior decided to uncover the past 64 seasons to pay homage to the road that helped pave Hoban football the top spot.

Joey McCallum accepted the challenge of highlighting Hoban football by creating individual posters for each season, starting with the first season way back in 1953.

“The past four state championships meant a lot for the school and its history,” McCallum said. “I thought it’d be a great idea to showcase the 64 seasons of Hoban football.”

With each poster displaying a team photo, staff names, overall record and scores for every game, McCallum has been tirelessly working since October and has produced the first 30.

Here’s the layout of the fourth season:

“The hardest part was getting the correct statistics on each team,” McCallum said. “Coordinating the team picture with the correct games and scores was really time-consuming.”

McCallum hopes to finish the last 34 seasons by April and also plans on highlighting the other five sports that originated in 1953 for Hoban–boys basketball, swimming, golf, baseball and track and field.

Br. Phil has spent two years gathering and researching the Hoban archives and McCallum took a keen interest in his projects. Br. Phil organizes while McCallum aids in the intricate details of the displays.

“The coolest thing I’ve taken away from this is Hoban’s history,” McCallum said. “I kept seeing ties between Hoban’s history and that decade’s history, it was just really neat. Also, how to complete the research in the archives and designing professional-looking posters was something new and exciting for me.”

McCallum’s posters have started and will continue being presented in front of the Central Office.
