The second semester harbors several cherished Hoban traditions: Holy Cross Hoops, Catholic Schools Week, Prom, and, more recently, Winter Formal. For years, the winter months of the second semester lacked this event, but it has been newly introduced due to high demand. Knights, this dance is a new tradition you will not want to miss.
After conversing with Student Council (STUCO) Co-President Lane Shannon, I gained insight into the major details. Structured much like Homecoming in the fall, this dance features a DJ, lights, and even Valentine’s Day decor. Shannon stated, “It is supposed to be similar to the Sadie Hawkins dances held previously at Hoban. STUCO hopes to revive the tradition starting with this year’s winter dance!”
Details for the Winter Formal were sent out in an email from STUCO in mid-January. But if you have neglected to check your inbox, let me catch you up! The dance will be held on Saturday, February 10th, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in Barry Gym, and the dress code is formal attire. “The dress code is much like homecoming,” exclaimed Shannon, “so remember to keep this in mind when shopping!”
Ticket sales began on January 29th and will end at 7:00 a.m. on February 10th, the morning of the dance. Throughout this time, prices will remain the same at $15 per ticket, with no additional fees.
Despite seeming similar, Winter Formal and Homecoming have one crucial difference. Winter Formal will not allow outside guests. Despite the additional ticket sales this would provide, Timothy Lucey provided insight into the decision-making process.
“It boils down to a spacing issue,” stated Lucey. “For Homecoming, students had the Alumni Gym, the Concourse, and the tented area outside to congregate. This is not the case for the Winter Formal, where we will only have Barry Gym. With over 800 students attending this past year’s Homecoming, including non-Hoban guests, space is obviously a problem.”
While outside guests may not be allowed, the dance will surely still be a blast for any Hoban students who attend. Given its proximity to Valentine’s Day, the dance could be a beautiful opportunity for a date night filled with dancing or even a way to spend a loving holiday with your best friends.
Whatever your Valentine’s Day plans may be, you will undoubtedly want to incorporate the dance into your itinerary. So mark your calendars and buy those tickets because the Winter Formal will be a night to remember!
