It is no secret that the days are getting warmer, summers are more intense, and winters are less frosty. Knights, we experienced this firsthand during the second week of school. With temperatures in the 90s, the heat had no choice but to permeate the hallowed halls of Archbishop Hoban.
Students tried everything: constantly filling up their Stanley cups, aggressively fanning themselves with papers, and wearing the darkest clothes they could find to avoid showing sweat stains. Classrooms were stocked with fans, but they only seemed to circulate the hot, thick air. If you were lucky, your classroom had a window air conditioning unit. Those fortunate enough to find one of these treasures could not help but gravitate toward it, hoping to soak up the cool air.
Even Moreau Ministry Hall, the holy grail of air-conditioned spaces at The Castle, was not immune to the heat. However, it was noticeably cooler than most classrooms.
It wasn’t just me feeling the effects. Students across all grades were trying to survive the heat. Freshman Julia Krejsa said, “It was horrible! I was sweating in every class, even though I only had on a polo and a skirt.”
Sophomore Kate Wiedt shared her survival tactic, saying, “I just drank a ton of water and tried to find cooler classrooms to get through the day.” Junior Logan Flachbart echoed the hydration strategy, adding, “I needed to bring a gallon of water to school every day. Even with that, I barely made it through Mr. Topp and Mr. Laubacher’s classes alive.”
Many students were hoping for a dress-down day to wear more breathable fabrics, but we will never know if that would have helped. A few students even passed out in their classes, leaving some to wonder if we should have had a “heat day” and spent our time relaxing by the pool. Nearby schools, including Stow-Munroe Falls High School, closed due to the extreme temperatures.
Thankfully, that three-day heatwave is behind us. Students are now hoping for cooler temperatures that match the pumpkin spice vibe that Dunkin’ and Starbucks are promoting. Let’s be honest, drinking a fall beverage in 80-degree weather just feels wrong.
So, hold off on breaking out those Hoban-issued hoodies, crewnecks, and letterman jackets until October, and enjoy the last few hot weeks of the year. Stay cool, Knights.
