The Social Network… 2?
Acclaimed director of “Fight Club” and “Seven,” David Fincher, released his movie “The Social Network” in 2010. The film made over a quarter of a billion dollars at the box office, and remains one of the best films of the 21st century.
The plot centers around Mark Zuckerberg and his path to creating Facebook, arguably the most successful website of all time. Throughout the film, Zuckerberg experiences a meteoric rise to wealth and power.
At the time, Zuckerberg had found himself in a myriad of controversy, thanks in part to a lawsuit that came from alienating his best friend and co-founder of Facebook, Eduardo Saverin. In addition to this, Zuckerberg found himself wrapped up in another lawsuit with the Winklevoss Twins, who claimed the tech wizard stole their idea.
In 2010, Zuckerberg had amassed a net worth of over $4 billion and Facebook had seen its user base grow to over 750 million.
Clearly, the 26-year-old was worthy of a film centered around his life.
Since then, Facebook has grown its active user base to over 2.7 billion, and Zuckerberg has seen his net worth reach over $92.9 billion. Many other events have occurred in the past decade, more than enough allowing for a well deserved sequel.
“The Social Network” screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has spoken about reuniting with Fincher for a sequel, stating: “A lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends.”
Zuckerberg has found himself in many difficult situations as CEO of Facebook, including a 2018 testimony before Congress, investigations over user data collection, the controversial internet.org movement and many other instances.
Sorkin received an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, proving his worth with some of the snappiest, engaging dialogue ever translated to the screen. Not only has Sorkin seen success with “The Social Network,” he has written scripts for “Moneyball”, “Molly’s Game” and “Steve Jobs,” all three films receiving great praise from around the film community.
Fincher has been no slouch as well, having directed “The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo” and hit Netflix series “Mindhunter.” The two could greatly benefit from another pairing, possibly cementing them as one of the greatest writer/director pairs of recent years.
While there are no guarantees, a sequel to this legendary film would certainly brighten up the film world. Not much has happened since the COVID-19 outbreak, and some positive news would do well to revitalize a currently dead industry.
