OHSAA Championships Approach

As championship season quickly approaches, the Hoban swim team reflects on a successful run. The first round of championships (Sectionals) will be held Friday, Feb. 9 at the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron. Division II teams face off in the Akron sectionals, all hopeful for a spot in the district finals.

What to look for? Freshman standout, Grace Wyzinski, broke the long-standing women’s 100 butterfly record and could top that at Ocasek. Junior Michael Heller looks to shatter his own records this year in the 50 and 100 freestyle. The boys’ relay team may break their own records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, while sophomore Megan Zaucha stands only three seconds away from the Hoban 500 freestyle record.

Last Weekend

The annual North Coast League Championships were held Saturday, Feb. 3 at Gilmour Academy. The girls swim team finished third out of 20 teams and the boys finished second out of eight teams at the meet. The Knights were awarded many All-Conference Honors, as well as most swimmers obtaining personal best times. Swimmers Luke Armao, Michael Heller and Justin Icsman ended the meet with a combined ten All-Conference awards. Grace Wyzinski and Megan Zaucha earned three each.  Mackenzie Long and Lily Zaucha, yours truly, also won all conference honors.

Highlighting the season-long efforts  Knights’ winning season and definitely foreshadow the success of the team at Sectionals. The team has worked unbelievably hard this season with two-a-days every day (before and after school), as well as five hour practices during Christmas break. The team’s dedication will be clear this Friday as the Knights compete in the Sectional Championships—each swimmer striving for personal best times.
