Fresh off their district championship triumph last season, the girls basketball squad at Hoban High School is on a mission for another crown this year. Boasting an impressive 18-3 record, the Knights are riding high on their winning streak.
In a dazzling display of both sportsmanship and history, the Knights paid tribute to the trailblazing women of Hoban’s inaugural coed graduating class from 1974 during their face-off against Green on February 7. The celebration marked the 50th anniversary of coeducation at Hoban, with a pre-game ovation that brought the crowd to its feet, honoring the women who etched their names in The Castle’s storied past.
The Knights have emerged victorious against formidable opponents, securing notable wins against Ellet, Howland, and Gilmour Academy. Displaying an unwavering bond on the court, shooting guard Finley Kennedy attributes their success to the team’s chemistry, stating, “We are a very close-knit team, which has propelled us through a demanding schedule and tough competition.”
Currently holding the coveted top seed among more than 70 teams in the state, the Knights are not resting on their laurels. Kennedy, with infectious enthusiasm, shares, “Our team has been climbing the ranks against the best in the state! Despite being a younger squad this year, our success continues to grow, and we’re evolving with each game.”
With only four upperclassmen, including seniors Devin Harris, Mackenzie Edingburgh, and Mayana Pooler, along with junior Finley Kennedy, the team boasts a perfect mix of experience and mentorship for the younger players.
Kennedy succinctly outlines the team’s aspirations, “Our goal is clear – to reach regionals and, fingers crossed, states. We’re eyeing a fifth consecutive district title for the girls basketball program.”
