Fans’ jaws dropped at Coachella with the surprise performance of Olivia Rodrigo’s new song, “Drop Dead.” Rodrigo appeared on stage on Saturday, April 18 during Addison Rae’s set. The duo sang Rae’s song “Headphones On” together before fans were surprised with a live performance of Rodrigo’s new single. Drop Dead is the lead single in Rodrigo’s upcoming album, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,” which is set for release on June 12, 2026.
Olivia Rodrigo’s new song is the perfect emotional song to listen to when you have a crush, or wish to break free from Rodrigo’s pattern of heartbreak. “Drop Dead” is a great blend of Rodrigo’s old music while ushering in a new era.
“This song is a really good addition to her discography. It was very emotional and I really liked it,” sophomore Colette Snell said. “Drop Dead” focuses on the hope and excitement of new love, but also the obsession that comes with a new crush. The song uses metaphors about Versailles to show the rose colored glass a crush is seen through, and discusses darker themes of stalking a crush online.
“She’s kind of switching it up, like, breaking from her normal pattern,” said sophomore Maria Brennan. Rodrigo’s upcoming album marks a shift in her career as her new song focuses more on love instead of heartbreak, setting a new tone for her upcoming album. Rodrigo is also shifting away from her purple album covers, with her new album featuring a pink and blue cover. Her album title is also significantly longer than her previous albums “Sour” and “Guts,” showing a change from the four letter words.
The release of “Drop Dead” has officially started a new chapter in Olivia Rodrigo’s music and with the release of “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love” looming close, fans are excited to see what she does next.
