Every February, Hoban celebrates Black History Month by recognizing the achievements and impact of influential Black leaders. Through school events, fundraisers and assemblies, Hoban strives to honor the legacy of several influential figures while also encouraging students to live their lives through their lens.
One of the most impactful and memorable ways Hoban celebrates Black History Month is through its annual One Hope-One Dream assembly, where the student body honors the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. During this event, the school invites Hoban alumni as well as two current students to speak about King’s impact on society and his part in their own lives. These speakers share their perspective on how Dr. King’s message of equality and justice continues to influence the world today. They also reignite King’s dream, reminding the Hoban community that his dream remains relevant and is something that should impact individuals’ daily way of living.
In addition to the assembly, every morning in February the building begins the morning announcements with an impactful quote or prayer from an impactful Black leader.
“Hoban has celebrated Black History Month by announcing the quotes of Black trailblazers during the morning announcements,” said Senior Sa’Raya Clopton.
This tradition highlights Black voices who have helped shape history in areas such as civil rights, politics and religion. By sharing their impactful words through prayer, quotes and excerpts, these daily messages allow students to learn about important figures and reflect on the powerful messages they left behind.
Another meaningful tradition at Hoban is the annual Soul Food Sale, which helps celebrate Black culture through food while also supporting the community.
“This year we raised around $50,” said Senior Kailee Hicks.
This was one of the most successful sales so far in Hoban history. This fundraiser requires hours of preparation and planning, much of it being organized by the members of The Black Student Union. Once the plate orders are placed the food must be prepared.
“Most of the officers make the food or we will have some people cater,” said Hicks.
The sale not only allows students to experience traditional soul food but also helps bring the community together through the love of good food and tradition.
In all, Hoban celebrates Black History Month by educating students, honoring influential leaders and hosting events that encourage the Hoban community to come together. Through assemblies, announcements and fundraisers the school continues to recognize the importance of Black history and culture. By honoring the lessons of influential leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Hoban encourages students to carry forward the values of equality, respect and service in their everyday lives.
