This year the junior staff members and Advisor Brian Luck attended the Ohio Scholastic Media Association (OSMA) Awards Banquet.
OSMA is an organization that supports student journalism. They partner with other scholastic journalism organizations, like Kent State University’s School of Media and Journalism.
High school newspaper supervisors all around Ohio send in their paper and their students’ work into their designated categories.
The ceremony was an all day event. In the morning and late afternoon, students and supervisors were allowed to attend workshops to strengthen their journalism skills. At night there was dinner with a keynote speaker Ethan Watts, who is a professional journalist from Toledo. After the dinner and speech, it became awards time.
With each category students could be awarded the prize in different levels. The first place recognition is superior, second place is excellent, and third place receives an honorable mention.
The Visor staff won 15 individual awards, spanning across all their online and print issue articles and graphics. The Visor was also recognized as a Silver Medal Student Newsmagazine and a Bronze Medal for Student News Website. With the feedback and recognition, The Visor staff hopes to make this ceremony a reoccurring celebration.
